Namdaemun Market is one of the most practical places in Seoul for travelers who want to shop, eat, and get things done quickly. For me, the biggest reason to visit is always the same: glasses.
Compared with many optical shops in Seoul, Namdaemun offers more choices, faster service, and competitive prices in one compact area. You can get an eye exam, choose frames, order lenses, explore the market, and even finish with dinner in just a few hours.

Where to Buy Glasses in Namdaemun
Namdaemun is especially famous for optical shops. The biggest advantage is speed. In many countries, prescription glasses can take several days, but in Namdaemun, the process can often be completed in one visit.
I visited two optical shops: Daeseong Optical and Samjeong Optical. Each one works better for a different purpose.
| Shop | Best For | My Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Daeseong Optical | Lens replacement and good value | I replaced lenses for my existing glasses and picked them up in about 1 hour. |
| Samjeong Optical | Designer frames and fast selection | I bought Tom Ford frames with Nikon blue light lenses. |

At Daeseong Optical, I needed high-compression lenses because I have strong astigmatism. The staff explained the lens options clearly, including the price difference between Korean and imported lenses.
- Korean lenses: around 50,000 KRW
- Imported lenses: around 90,000 KRW
- Nidek lenses: 98,000 KRW
- Estimated processing time: about 1 hour
At Samjeong Optical, I bought Tom Ford glasses with Nikon blue light lenses. The shop is smaller, but that made the selection process faster and easier.
- Tom Ford frames: 380,000 KRW
- Nikon lenses: 90,000 KRW
- Processing time: about 30 minutes
For lens value, I would choose Daeseong Optical. For designer frames and quick selection, Samjeong Optical is a strong option.
What Else to Buy at Namdaemun Market
While waiting for my glasses, I spent about an hour walking around Namdaemun Market. The market is one of Korea’s most famous traditional markets, with specialized sections for everyday goods, wholesale items, children’s clothing, accessories, pajamas, socks, bags, and souvenirs.
This part of the market is useful for travelers who want affordable, practical items rather than polished department-store shopping. Pajamas, socks, and small Korean souvenirs are especially easy to browse.
| Category | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| Socks and Pajamas | Affordable daily items, often better with cash payment |
| Children’s Clothing | One of Namdaemun’s best-known wholesale categories |
| Souvenirs | Small Korean gifts, accessories, and traditional-style items |

OFF BEAUTY: K-Beauty Outlet in Namdaemun
Another useful stop in Namdaemun is OFF BEAUTY, a warehouse-style K-beauty outlet. It is a good place to browse discounted Korean skincare and makeup without going to a major shopping district.
You can find sheet masks, makeup, hair care, and discounted products from popular Korean brands. If you are already visiting Namdaemun for glasses, it is easy to add OFF BEAUTY to the same route.

After Shopping: Local Korean BBQ
Namdaemun is not only about shopping. The area also has many old-school local restaurants that have been serving office workers, shoppers, and market visitors for decades.
After picking up my glasses, I went to a local Korean BBQ restaurant called Delicious Samgyeopsal. The restaurant has a classic neighborhood atmosphere, and the side dishes were fresh and well-prepared.
The must-try menu is gochujang samgyeopsal, or spicy pork belly. It has enough flavor to feel special, but it is not overwhelmingly spicy, so it works well even for many international visitors.
After the meat, fried rice is a good finish. It tastes even better when wrapped in lettuce with the remaining pork.
A 3-Hour Namdaemun Itinerary
