Where to Stay in Seoul: Why Subway Line 2 Is the Best Choice for First-Time Visitors

If you are wondering where to stay in Seoul for your first trip, the easiest answer is simple: stay near Seoul Subway Line 2.

Line 2 connects many of the city’s most useful neighborhoods for travelers, from Hongdae and Euljiro to Seongsu, Jamsil, Gangnam, and Samseong. It is also connected to Hongik University Station, where many travelers arrive after taking the Airport Railroad from Incheon Airport.

For first-time visitors, the most important question is not only which neighborhood looks the prettiest. It is whether you can move around Seoul easily every day. If you are still planning your airport transfer, you may also want to read my Incheon Airport to Seoul Guide before choosing your hotel area.

Why Stay Near Subway Line 2 in Seoul?

Seoul Subway Line 2 route map connecting Hongdae, Seongsu, Jamsil, Gangnam, and Samseong

Seoul is much bigger than many first-time visitors expect. Staying near Subway Line 2 makes the city easier to understand because this circular line passes through many of Seoul’s most useful travel areas.

From Hongik University Station, you can explore Hongdae, Yeonnam-dong, Sangsu, and Hapjeong. Moving east, Line 2 also connects you to City Hall, Euljiro, Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, Sindang, Ttukseom, Seongsu, Jamsil, Gangnam, and Samseong.

For travelers, this means fewer complicated transfers, easier shopping days, and a much smoother return to your hotel after dinner or a late-night walk.

For a first trip to Seoul, staying near good transportation is often more important than staying in the “prettiest” neighborhood.

Hongdae, Myeongdong, and Euljiro: The Classic First-Trip Route

Hongik University Station is one of the easiest places to stay if you want to experience Seoul like younger locals do. From here, you can naturally move between Hongdae, Yeonnam-dong, Sangsu, and Hapjeong without building a complicated itinerary.

The area works especially well if you want cafes, casual shopping, street fashion, restaurants, bars, and live music all within easy reach. If you want to explore a more local side of the area after checking into your hotel, my Sangsu and Hapjeong Local Course pairs well with a Hongdae stay.

City Hall Station is close to Deoksugung Palace, making it a good choice if you want a calmer central base. You can walk around the palace stone-wall road, explore Jeongdong-gil, and take a break at cafes with a palace-side atmosphere.

Euljiro 1-ga Station is connected to Lotte Department Store’s Myeongdong area, and Exit 6 leads you directly toward Myeongdong’s shopping streets. If you walk down toward Myeongdong Station, you can cover beauty stores, street food, department stores, and duty-free shopping in one compact route.

Euljiro 3-ga Station is famous for Nogari Alley and its casual outdoor drinking culture. If you want to experience Seoul’s night food scene beyond polished restaurants, this area gives you a very different mood from Myeongdong.

Old printing alleys, small bars, and retro-style restaurants are mixed together here, so the neighborhood becomes much more interesting after sunset. It is one of the easiest places to feel Seoul’s local night culture without leaving the city center.

Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station and Sindang Station are also on Line 2, which makes it easy to combine Dongdaemun and Sindang in one evening. In Dongdaemun, you can visit DDP, the landmark designed by Zaha Hadid, and explore late-night shopping malls nearby.

Sindang has become so popular among younger Koreans that people now often call it “Hipdang-dong.” The area has a growing number of cafes, bars, and fashion-related spaces. Korean designer brand Low Classic can also be found here. In particular, the Mirae Building branch, renewed in May 2026, has become a fashion, cafe, and exhibition-driven retail space that feels more like a cultural stop than a simple showroom.

Still, Sindang’s original icon is tteokbokki. Sindang-dong Tteokbokki Town has been part of Seoul’s local food culture since long before the neighborhood became trendy.

Seongsu and Seoul Forest: Seoul’s Trendiest Stay Area

Crowded shopping street in Seongsu Seoul with Korean fashion stores and pop-up shops

From Sindang Station, it takes only four stops on Line 2 to reach Ttukseom Station, and Seongsu Station is just below it on the same line. If you had to choose one neighborhood that shows what feels current in Seoul right now, Seongsu would be one of the strongest answers.

This area brings together Seoul Forest, pop-up stores, Korean fashion showrooms, cafes, lifestyle shops, and local market culture. It is the kind of neighborhood where you can spend an entire day walking without feeling like you are following a typical tourist route.

For cafes between shopping stops, read my Seongsu Cafes Between Shopping Stops. If your main interest is Korean fashion and showroom culture, my Korean Brand Showrooms in Seongsu gives you a more focused route.

For a quieter shopping day near the park, my Seoul Forest Shopping Guide is a better match. If you want to see how the neighborhood changes from day to night, you can also add my Ttukdo Market Day-to-Night Guide to your route.

Seongsu is not only a shopping district. It is one of the easiest places to see how Seoul’s younger generation spends time, shops, and discovers new brands.

  • Boutique stays near Seoul Forest

Best for: Travelers who prefer a quieter neighborhood feel near the park rather than a large hotel atmosphere.

Jamsil, Gangnam, and Samseong: Shopping and the Modern Seoul Route

Lotte World theme park and skyline view in Jamsil Seoul Korea

Another strong Line 2 area is Jamsil Station. Centered around Lotte World Tower, this neighborhood brings together sightseeing, shopping, skyline views, and theme park experiences in one compact area.

Lotte World, Lotte World Mall, Lotte Department Store, Avenue L, Hi-Mart, and the surrounding shopping complex are all connected, which makes Jamsil especially useful on rainy, very hot, or very cold days.

You can also walk around Seokchon Lake or plan a picnic at Olympic Park nearby. For food, I would look beyond the mall and search for Blue Ribbon restaurants around Jamsil if you want a more local dining experience.

If you are interested in a room with a skyline or river view, my Best Seoul Hotels for Hangang River Views also includes Signiel Seoul in more detail.

Recommended Hotels Near Jamsil Station

  • Sofitel Ambassador Seoul Hotel & Serviced Residences

Gangnam Station is one of the symbolic stations on Line 2. It is a major area for large SPA brand shopping, K-beauty, dermatology clinics, restaurants, and late-night streets.

If you want to feel Seoul at its busiest and most urban, Gangnam is worth passing through. This is where you can most easily experience the city’s “sleepless Seoul” atmosphere, with shopping and dining options that stay active late into the night.

Samseong Station is another useful Line 2 stop, especially if you want everything indoors. Around COEX, you can shop, eat, visit Starfield Library, stop by Bongeunsa Temple, and access Hyundai Department Store Trade Center Branch without worrying too much about the weather.

Because this is one of Seoul’s major business and shopping districts, Samseong feels more polished and structured than Hongdae or Seongsu. It is a good choice for travelers who prefer a clean, modern Gangnam base.

Recommended Hotels Near Samseong Station and COEX

  • Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas
Location: Connected to the Samseong and COEX area
Best for: Travelers who want a luxury hotel directly linked to one of Seoul’s most convenient indoor shopping districts.
  • Oakwood Premier COEX Center Seoul
    Location: Inside the COEX area
Best for: Families, longer stays, and travelers who prefer residence-style rooms with strong COEX access.
  • Hotel Peyto Samseong
Location: Within walking distance of COEX and Samseong Station
Best for: Travelers who want a practical business-style hotel near COEX without choosing a full luxury property.

How to Visit Apgujeong Rodeo and Dosan Park from Line 2

Even if you stay on Line 2, you can still reach Apgujeong Rodeo and Dosan Park without difficulty. Transfer at Seolleung Station to the Suin-Bundang Line, and after three stops you will arrive at Apgujeong Rodeo Station.

This area is home to Galleria Department Store, Cheongdam luxury streets, flagship stores, fashion boutiques, cafes, and some of Seoul’s most polished shopping scenes. If you are planning a full shopping route in this area, read my Apgujeong Rodeo Shopping Guide before you go.

  • Transfer: Line 2 Seolleung Station → Suin-Bundang Line
  • Stop: Apgujeong Rodeo Station
  • Best for: Luxury shopping, flagship stores, fashion cafes, and the Dosan Park area

How to Choose the Best Area to Stay in Seoul

If you want young energy, cafes, and nightlife, stay near Hongdae. If you want easy shopping and a very central location, choose Myeongdong or Euljiro. If you want local night culture, look toward Euljiro 3-ga, Dongdaemun, or Sindang.

If your priority is Korean brands, pop-ups, cafes, and Seoul’s current trend scene, Seongsu is the strongest choice. For families, skyline views, and large indoor shopping complexes, Jamsil works very well. For polished shopping, COEX, and a modern Gangnam stay, Samseong is one of the easiest areas to recommend.

Seoul is a large city, but staying near Subway Line 2 makes the whole trip feel much easier. For a first visit, it is one of the safest and most practical hotel-location strategies.

Before using the subway every day, you may also want to prepare your transport card in advance. I explained the basics in my How to Use T-money Card in Seoul guide.
